Positive Parenting FAQs
Understanding Positive Parenting

Positive parenting is an evidence-based approach that focuses on building a strong relationship with your child through empathy, respect, and consistent guidance, without harsh punishments or yelling. Our rule of thumb, is to only yell at your child if they are in danger, i.e. crossing the road without looking. It encourages emotional development, self-regulation, and lifelong connection.

Positive Parenting was co-written by Dr Terence Sheppard, a psychologist with more than 30 years’ experience in clinical and organisational settings, and his partner Dr Margaret Kummerow, a paediatrician who has worked exclusively with children and their parents since 2003. Drawing on decades of professional expertise, research into child development and youth mental health, and their own experience raising three children, they created a practical, research-based handbook to support parents at every stage – from newborns to adult children.
