What is Positive Parenting?

It's more than just a buzzword—it's a parenting model designed to minimise the risk of mental disorders in your children and empower them to face life's challenges head-on. From battling addiction to managing stress, this approach equips them with the tools they need. Most importantly, it lays the groundwork for them to become confident, autonomous individuals, capable of choosing a life path that truly resonates with them.

Research findings and the experiences of generations have consistently shown that the way children are raised by their parents or caregivers is the most influential factor in shaping the adults they become. It outweighs factors like DNA or socio-economic background.

So, how do we approach parenting in a way that fosters positive outcomes? We do this through Positive Parenting.

About the Authors

Dr Terence Sheppard (B.Ec., B.A. Psych. (Hons), PhD) is a psychologist and his partner, Dr Margaret Kummerow (MBBS, FRACP) is a paediatrician.

Following time in academia Terence has spent more than 30 years as a private consultant working in clinical and organisational settings focusing on child and adult mental health as well as leadership and safety in the workplace. Margaret was a GP for 12 years, before qualifying as a paediatrician, and since 2003 has worked exclusively with children and their parents. During this period, they have also raised their own children Hugh, Rory, and Megan, who feature in the book – alongside many other young people – to provide examples for parents of what and what not to do.

This book is the product of countless conversations between the authors about children and their parents and particularly why some youngsters thrive while others struggle. In this book they have combined their clinical experience with current research into child development and youth mental health to give modern parents a useful handbook for the most important job of their lives, raising the next generation.

This book will be of value to all parents whatever your situation –married, single, gay, step or adoptive – and wherever you are on the parenting journey. Whether you are ‘beginners’ with your first newborn, dealing with ‘rowdy’ pre-teens, guiding teenagers through the complexities of adolescence or assisting adult children to find a worthwhile life for themselves, there is plenty of advice and encouragement to be found in the pages of ‘Positive Parenting’.
